Flooding
Increased Rainfall and Flooding
The changing climate is resulting in many places in the UK experiencing heavier and more prolonged periods of heavy rainfall. This means that flooding is becoming more common, and buildings are more likely to suffer from damp issues.
The best way to manage this is to ensure that your building is maintained in good condition and that breathable materials are used. The use of breathable materials is important because it will enable the building to dry out quicker. This will reduce the risk of damp, mould growth, insect and fungal attack. This includes making sure rainwater goods and roofs are in good repair and drains and drainage ditches are maintained.
Historic England provides detailed advice on how to protect you building from flooding and what to do if your building floods. This can be found in the further information section of this page. Please note that if you building is listed, then some preventative measures or repairs following flooding could require listed building consent. If you have any concerns about this, then you should seek pre-application advice from the Council.
