Council owned cemeteries

Cotswold District Council has two cemeteries in Cirencester.

Chesterton Cemetery

Chesterton Cemetery was opened for burials in May 1872.

Opening hours: 

  • Winter: October to March  Monday – Saturday   8am - 5pm, Sunday 10am - 5pm
  • Summer: April to October : Monday to Friday 8am – 8pm, Saturday 8am - 5pm, Sunday 10am – 5pm

Stratton Cemetery

Stratton Cemetery was opened for burials in July 1888.

  • Open to the public all year round.

Register of burials

The Register of Burials and other burial records for the cemeteries are held for safe keeping by the Council. No records are kept at the cemeteries.  Through our burial records we can offer assistance to people researching family history.

Arranging a burial

In the majority of instances, those making arrangements for the burial of a loved one will do so through the services of a professional Funeral Director.  The Council's Licensing Section will be pleased to assist and advise those wishing to make funeral arrangements without the services of a Funeral Director. 

Fees and charges

Fees and charges are applicable to Chesterton and Stratton cemeteries.

The Interment fees:

(a)  include the digging of the grave

(b)  apply when the interment is made within the following hours:

  •  April to September - Mondays - Fridays   9am - 3pm
  •  October to March - Mondays - Fridays   9am - 2pm

(c)  apply when the interment is made on the certificate of a coroner or registered medical practitioner that immediate interment is necessary.

In any other case an additional charge is payable.

Green burial

A green burial is designed to sensitively lay to rest someone in an ecologically friendly way.
