Banding Information
The amount each household pays for Council Tax is based upon the value of the property, the location of that property and the individual circumstances of the occupants.
Properties are valued and placed into 1 of 8 bands based on house prices as at 1st April 1991. The band associated with your property can be found on your bill, or by contacting the Council Tax Section direct.
It is the responsibility of the Valuation Office, which is part of the Inland Revenue, to band properties for Council Tax.
The property values for each band are shown below:
Band | Property Value at 1991 Prices |
|---|---|
| A | Up to £40,000 |
| B | £40,001 to £52,000 |
| C | £52,001 to £68,000 |
| D | £68,001 to £88,000 |
| E | £88,001 to £120,000 |

The Right Band?
There are very few circumstances in which appeals against banding can be made and are restricted to :
- An increase in the property value resulting from building work where revaluation has taken place after a sale.
- A decrease in the property value due to the demolition of any part of the property, any changes in the physical state of the local area or an adaptation for use by someone with a disability.
- The balance between domestic and business use of your property changing
Making an appeal does not allow you to withhold payment of Council Tax. If your appeal is successful you will be entitled to a refund of any overpayment.
