Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases

We investigate outbreaks of food poisoning, viral outbreaks and certain other infectious diseases reported to us by members of the public, and the Health Protection Agency.

Viral gastro enteritis can give similar symptoms to food poisoning and is often confused for food poisoning. Viral gastro enteritis gives severe short duration symptoms (typically 24-48 hours) and can be very contagious.

During an investigation we will often contact the people affected by the infection to try to find the cause and to stop it spreading. We may complete questionnaires with people in an attempt to identify a potential source of the illness. We may also provide sample bottles for faecal samples and arrange to take these to a pathogen laboratory for testing.  Alternatively we may advise that you contact your own GP to arrange the taking of a faecal sample.

In rare cases premises may have to be closed to prevent the spread of an illness.

If you would like further advice or information please contact the food and safety team.
