Freedom of Information

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 gives a right of access to a wide range of information held by public authorities. Under the Act:-

  • public authorities are required to maintain a Publication Scheme
  • any person has a statutory right to request information under the Act.

The Publication Scheme is a guide to the information that the Council publishes as a matter of routine. It sets out the classes of information that the council publishes, how it will be published and accessed, what fees there might be, the procedure for making requests etc. The scheme is intended to ensure that a wide range of information is easily available without the need to make specific requests for information.

You can download our publication scheme and classes below.

The Council already makes a large proportion of this information available through its website.

Any person who makes a request to the Council for information must be informed whether the Council holds that information and provided with it (subject to exemptions).

Individuals already have the right of access to personal information about themselves under the Data Protection Act and the Freedom of Information Act extends this right to non-personal information. See related link below for details about the Council's Data Protection Policy.

More details about the Freedom of Information Act can be found on the Information Commission website.
