Street Naming and Numbering

The address of a property is an important issue - Police, Emergency Services, Royal Mail and the general public need a way of locating and referencing properties. Cotswold District Council is responsible for the naming and numbering of all streets and properties within the District.

House Name or Number Change to an Existing Address

We provide a service which will inform all relevant agencies (including the emergency services, land registry and Royal Mail) of your house name or number change.  It is your responsibility to inform personal contacts and utilities.  The Council strongly advises against the use of a similar or duplicate property name within the immediate area. We will run a check before processing your request, and advise you if there is a similarly named property locally.  You can apply online for changes to an existing address using the link below:

New developments

If you are responsible for a new development which requires a new naming and / or numbering scheme, please let us know as soon as planning permission is obtained and building work has commenced to avoid delay in the provision of postal addresses and post codes. Where developments take place which incorporate the building of new access roads, the names for these roads must be approved by us. Address Confirmation or Query

If you wish to report an inconsistency in your current address between what the Council holds and what Royal Mail holds or does not hold, or you wish to have confirmation of your official address,  please contact the Council’s LLPG Custodian on:

• streetnaming@cotswold.gov.uk 
• 01285 623 000.

Resolving these queries will not be charged.

Street Nameplates 

Generally, it falls upon the Council to maintain the street nameplates that exist throughout the district. This applies to street nameplates only. No other highway signs or street furniture is covered, these in the main being the responsibility of Gloucestershire County Council who are the Highway Authority for the area.

Postcodes

If you have queries about your existing Post Code, please contact Royal Mail on 08456 045 060.

New Post Codes are allocated by Royal Mail, but we manage that process on your behalf as part of the Street Naming and Numbering process.
