Let’s reduce cold-related deaths in the Cotswolds!

Release Date: Mar 05, 2012

In a bid to reduce the number of cold-related deaths in the Cotswolds, Cotswold District Council is working with partner organisations to offer free, independent and impartial advice about home insulation grants and essential tips to cut energy costs.

“Although we were blessed with a reasonably mild winter, statistics show that there have been a high number of cold-related deaths in the Cotswolds over the last few years,” said Cllr Carole Topple, the Cabinet lead for Housing and Communities at CDC. “Additionally, regardless of the season, energy bills have been rising at an alarming rate leading to real hardship for an increasing number of people.

“For this reason, we want to reach residents in areas where we know there is a higher risk of their health being affected by the cold.  Rising fuel costs are placing more families in fuel poverty and people are being forced to choose between heating and eating – we can help to alleviate that problem by spreading the word about energy saving.”

The Council’s Sustainable Communities and Housing team, working with NHS Gloucestershire and home energy experts from the county’s Warm and Well campaign, will be at local markets to spread the word about the help available.

Everyone is encouraged to come and meet the Warm and Well Energy Ambassadors at:

Stow Farmers market     Thu 8th March (located within the GUiDE & PALS bus)

Moreton-in-Marsh           Tues 20th March (on a stall at the market)

Cirencester                     Fri 23rd March (located within the GUiDE & PALS bus or stall at market)

As well as meeting people face to face, Warm and Well experts from the Severn Wye Energy Agency offer free, impartial information and advice about any home energy issues and can also signpost callers to the very best grants for insulation.  They are also on freephone 0800 500 3076 or text WARM to 83010.
