CDC and local MP back English Tourism Week

Release Date: Feb 23, 2012

English Tourism week is usually a busy time in the Cotswolds and 2012 is no exception with an impressive range of events taking place to launch this year’s tourist season.

Local MP Geoffrey Clifton Brown has always been keen to support this promotional week, and is helping things get off to a good start when he visits the Cotswold District Council-funded Tetbury Visitor Information Centre at 12.30 pm on Saturday 10 March. He is planning to meet the staff in their busy office and also hopes to join in the fun around the town, which will include guided walks, book signing, brass band music, and a chance to view the police museum.

Other CDC-funded Tourist Information Centres in the district will also be hosting events throughout the week.  Highlights include a ‘Taste of an English cream tea’ at Bourton Visitor Information Centre on Saturday 10 March, and an English-themed coffee morning at Moreton Area Centre on Wednesday14 March, which will feature local food from businesses in the town followed by a short walk (weather permitting!)  Meanwhile, Cotswolds Tourism will be running a promotional stand at the Cheltenham National Hunt Festival on 13 March, to show race-goers that the area has a lot to offer away from the legendary course itself.

Commenting on the launch of the new season, CDC’s Cabinet lead for Customer Services, Councillor Barry Gibbs, said: “This should be a memorable year for the tourism industry in the Cotswolds, buoyed by the ‘feel good’ factor generated by the Queen’s diamond jubilee and the expected influx of foreign tourists during the Olympic games.  Thanks to the efforts of Cotswolds Tourism and others, the international profile of this area is at an all time high, and I am sure that newcomers and returning visitors will be very impressed by the wide range of attractions and  events on offer in our towns and villages, as well as the natural charm and beauty that makes it so unique.”
